Elegy Short Film Analysis

In this short film it follows one character very closely, he looks very sadistic but it turns out that he has a rose that he needs to deliver to a certain place which could potentially be the cure. Although you can see no emotion on his face mid shots are used to show his body language.

In the first shot there is a black screen and we see informative text that explains very briefly exactly what has happened to humanity and why it has taken a turn for the worst. No music or sound is used throughout this shot to add a sense of nothingness and that there is no hope

Here we see a pan of several newspapers that show the devastation that has been caused by nature in this case. It states the amount of people affected to amplify the effect of the world coming to devastation

In this shot we see a close up of his calendar that he has made and it shows that it has potentially been 25 years since the devastation happened. This gives us a sense of no cure because it has been such a long time since the first breakout.

Low key lighting is used at the beginning of the film when we see the character without his mask and this is used to add mystery to the character as he is not revealed until the final scene. This is why throughout the film we are put under the impression that this guy is a thug that just kills people with the only purpose of surviving

In this scene we see the main character in the post apocalyptic wasteland walking past broken glass, the camera is positioned in the broken glass to show the devastation and how humanity is broken and shattered, they use a pan to show the character trudging through the wasteland, we see him alone and almost helpless wearing his gas mask which is portrayed as his safety blanket almost, it's the thing keeping him alive and is his trademark look.

In this scene we can see a large object laying next to what we presume is his base, the size of the object is used as an effect to show the devastation that nature has caused, even something as big as that has fallen to the hands of nature. The long shot used shows the contrast between man and nature as we can see the wide open plane that is pretty intimidating and the huge object that has fallen, then you see the character in the midst of it all.

In this scene we see the protagonist looking at the two people who seem to have just murdered a man sitting on a wall. They use an over the shoulder shot to show that the protagonist is looking at them, The body on the floor seems to have his head missing so the brutality is portrayed through this.
In this scene we see effects to display gore on the antagonist after being hit with a baseball bat, the brutality is portrayed through the use of a close up on her face to show the flesh that is wounded from the hit. We then see the other antagonist crawl on top of her and show some form of emotion which again shows that humanity isn't lost and can still be fixed.
In this scene, we can't see anything but the protagonist swinging his baseball bat and the use of diegetic sounds, this allows us to feel the effects of what is happening without actually seeing the person getting brutally beaten with a baseball bat, they also use a mid shot to show the protagonist swinging his baseball bat viciously and they also use a wall so we can't see the man actually getting beaten.
In this scene, we see a group shot of antagonists wielding weapons whilst watching the protagonist approach them, from this we can see that the intent of this group is to murder the protagonist, we get this very sinister vibe from the group that seems to be a mixture of different races/professions.

In this scene, we see a group fight action scene between the protagonist and the group of antagonists, we have a long shot of all of the characters fighting each other with multiple weapons, we actually see the protagonist getting hit and injured which goes against the convention of most films where the protagonist seems to be invincible and untouchable. In the end we see the protagonist win but he does get stabbed in the stomach by a machete.
In this scene we see the camera pan around the protagonist after the fight scene where he starts feel the effects of being stabbed, this pan gives us a feeling of chaos and pain. he hunches over and grabs his stomach to try and ease the pain, blood is seen staining his clothes too.
In this scene we see the protagonist reveal himself after putting down what seems to be the cure for humanity as it appears to kill off the infected and clears the air because he takes off his gas mask. This is wear we see the antagonists drop dead because they were infected and now the cure has killed them. we see the protagonist drop dead too because of his wounds and then the short film comes to an end.
